Marilene Morency is a mostly self-taught metal artist.
Having travelled to North Africa in her early childhood, she has always been fascinated with the ancient art of filigree.
In 1998, having her family’s tools at hand, Marilene began exploring metal arts. She later got her diploma in textile techniques and did research on filigree. Combining these techniques, along with paper ones, she developed and refined her jewellery style and worked in her home studio full time from 2004 to 2012. She mostly created one-of-a-kind sterling silver pieces.
"Combining quilling with filigree work, I like to do free-hand patterns,
trying different combinations until I find a balanced composition.
I like to create miniature ambiances, abstract and fluid shapes,
playing with notions of presence versus absence.
I am always looking for ways to incorporate detail
into my work without losing sight of the big picture."
